Situation

An essential element to any clinical project is the establishment of a streamlined strategic plan needed to successfully coordinate and implement all of the medical equipment into the space. To ensure an on-time project delivery of the ICU west renovation at Piedmont Atlanta, it was imperative that the BDR team execute a plan to identify, examine, select and procure all of the medical equipment, as well as exceed the standard requirements for an ICU unit to provide optimal patient care.

BDR Solution

An accurate and appropriate medical equipment management plan was established and put into effect in order to avoid project delays and to ensure that the equipment procurement stayed within budget.  The BDR team collaborated with the not only ICU clinicians and nurses to organize assess and coordinate the process through equipment delivery and set-up, review and CNO approval, but worked closely with Biomed and Procurement in order to ensure system consistencies and purchasing protocols were maintained.

Results

At 6:00 am on ICU Go Live Day, the first patient was successfully transferred into a post-surgical room on the new unit. Followed by the relocation of the other post-surgical patients in addition to an unforeseen heart transplant patient that happens only several times a year. BDR worked efficiently prior to the opening of the unit and the morning of receiving patients with EVS, Infection Control, Information Systems, and seamlessly with Operations to not only complete the project on time and significantly under budget, but provide an enhanced environment for patients, family, and the Critical Care staff.
