Tomorrow’s College Labs Require Adaptability and Cross-functionality

Specific discipline, sectioned off, college labs and research facilities are a thing of the past. Today, the new trend is cross collaboration of multiple disciplines sharing one space. This new trend is changing how construction and design of these spaces are being performed. We take initiative at BDR to set up clients wanting this type of space for success. Recently, our team was able to create a space for Georgia Tech where diverse disciplines are able to come together to foster new technologies and ideas.

“WELL” buildings and a desire for environmental sustainability are also playing a role in the construction of lab environments. WELL Building-certified spaces is the connection between buildings and the health and wellness of their occupants. These buildings are meant to create a built environment that impacts well-being through air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and mind.

“The LEED piece is still attractive, but if you look at institutions that like to be on the cutting edge, it’s about WELL building. That means it’s not just about the functionality of the facility itself, but the people that inhabit that building.” – Katie Leonard
