Piedmont Fayette Hospital Emergency Department & Patient Tower

Situation

Faced with an aging demographic that needs exceptional healthcare, the Emergency Department at Piedmont Fayette Hospital lacked efficiency and space. Further, semi-private rooms left a dated feel to the hospital as more inpatient systems moved toward private rooms. Piedmont Fayette Hospital engaged BDR to help them maximize the ROI of their new tower project. The project started as a $22 million ground to 2nd floor project. The Emergency Department would undergo a renovation and expansion, and the additional floors would feature patient care space, though the ribbon cutting ceremony revealed results far beyond the original scope.

BDR Solution

During the project, patient demand increased, and the economy began to rebound, both of which opened room for a larger budget and scope. Due to BDR’s precise management, a change in scope was ordered during the shop drawing steel phase, which led to the accommodation of two additional patient floors and a mechanical penthouse. With this precise tracking of needs and team capabilities, these floors were added with a 12-week addition to the schedule. Further, BDR engaged user groups throughout the process to make sure no request went unnoticed. The team also used Virtual Reality technology during the design process to make decision making more efficient.

Results

Even with the additional scope, the project was delivered with approximately 30% of cost savings. If the scope additions were added any later, the additional three floors would have had to been completed under a separate project and taken much longer to unveil. The new ED features 57 examination rooms and a streamlined patient flow through an exam pod layout. The new floors increased PFH’s licensed bed capacity from 172 to 221 and all beds are now in private rooms creating an improved patient experience. PFH was one of the busiest hospitals in the Piedmont Healthcare system, the expansion allowed PFH to serve its growing patient population and recruit additional healthcare professionals.
